For an overview of the profession, see the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook. Currently, the most recent BLS employment data for paralegals and legal assistants is from May of 2011. Note that these data exclude legal secretaries, so be sure to look also at legal secretary employment data when you consider employment opportunities in the profession. There are about as many legal secretaries as paralegals nationwide, but the distribution varies; here in Alabama, legal secretaries are more common that paralegals. I’ve created a spreadsheet of Alabama employment data below; you can also create your own custom spreadsheet using the Occupational Employment Statistics Query System.
You can find an overview of the most recent paralegal employment from the Bureau of Labor statistics. Remember that the BLS data does not include information about legal secretaries, which is here. Below is a spreadsheet of BLS employment data for paralegals specific to Alabama.
Have a good weekend.
